How to Make a Simple Homemade Mosquito Trap With Cut Bottles

Summer is right around the corner and you know what that means – MOSQUITOS. Here is a simple way to rid yourself of this problem.

You Will Need:

1.) 1 Soda Bottle

2.) 1 Bag of Brown Sugar

3.) 1 Jar of Yeast

4.) 1 Knife

5.) 1 Measuring Cup

HOW:

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.

Your bottle should look like this:

2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with hot water.

3. Pour the sugar into the bottom half of the cut plastic bottle.

4. Pour 400 ml (apprx 1 3/4 cup) of very hot water. Let cool.

5. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.

6. You will only need a pinch or two. Pinch the yeast between your fingers and add to the mixture. You do not need to stir it. Let it sit for awhile.

7. When you’re finished, place the bottle top upside down facing the mixture. The mosquitos are attracted to the liquid and will fly into the opening. They (most likely) will not be able to escape once inside the bottle.

When you’re all finished your mosquito trap should look like this:

Why brown sugar instead of white?

I have always used brown sugar and found it to be most effective. I will have to get back to you on that one. I am pretty confident that you can use white sugar as long as you combine it with the yeast. It has to ferment for it to work! Thanks! Please let us know if you try the white and it is just as effective. 🙂

I’m an experienced homebrewer who brews beer/wine etc. I thought I’d try this since it works on the same principle. However, I live in MI and it did not work for me even though I followed the recipe to the letter and got a good fermentation going. I’ve heard that some mosquito in different parts of the states prefer different things. Maybe this is why?

So disappointing … it didn’t work. Albeit, I did catch 3 flies, but not even one mosquito wandered over to check it out (they are busy feasting on my sweet blood and tender flesh as we speak – figuratively, of course).

I’ve seen this diy mosquito traps on many other sites. It must work for most but it never works when I try to make it. DIY projects have never been my strong point. I still to bought mosquito traps. Has anybody used this? I’ve seen it a lot on the net. I tried this last year, but it did not work. 🙁 What could I have done wrong, or why didn’t it work for me?
